01 / Switch layout
A Joy-Con can feel like three different pads. Attach both units to a Switch for handheld play. Hold one in each hand for a relaxed split setup. Turn one sideways for a small pad with rail buttons. Each mode changes the way your fingers reach the controls, so a short check can save a long game session filled with missed inputs. The Joy-Con Test tool above gives you a quick browser view of those signals before you blame a game or a console.
The rails hold both units on the console. The left side handles the direction pad and minus key. The right side carries the face keys and plus key. This is the most familiar setup, but it can hide small faults because the game gives you many signals at once.
One Joy-Con sits in each hand. That gap gives your wrists more room and makes motion play feel natural. It also makes a loose rail, weak link, or worn stick easier to notice. Test each unit as its own browser slot.
A sideways Joy-Con uses the small SL and SR keys on the rail. Those buttons depend on narrow ribbon parts inside the shell. The Horizontal view makes those inputs easy to reach and easy to compare.
Joy-Con hardware also has features that do not travel through the normal Gamepad API. HD Rumble can create a soft buzz or a sharp tap. The right unit has an infrared camera for supported games and toys. Those features are part of the Nintendo design, yet a browser tester should only claim the signals it can read. A visible button state proves that the browser saw an input. It does not prove every Switch feature is healthy.
02 / Known issue
Joy-Con drift happens when a stick sends a direction while your thumb is off the cap. Your player may walk, a menu may scroll, or a camera may turn on its own. The fault can start as a tiny nudge. Later, it can become a constant pull. That change is why a calm browser check helps. Fast play can hide a small offset, while a still page shows the point moving near the center target.
A stick module uses contact parts that can wear. Dust, skin oil, and normal friction may add noise to the signal. A new pad can also show an early problem. That does not mean you caused it. It also does not mean every moving point needs a new part. Start with a clean test. Let the stick rest, watch the point for several seconds, then move it slowly around the edge. Compare the result with a second browser or a second controller when you can. A game deadzone may hide a small offset, but it does not repair the raw signal.
You can try the Switch calibration screen, clean around the cap with care, or use a game deadzone as a short-term aid. Do not pour liquid into the shell. If the point keeps walking after a clean check, a replacement module or support repair may be the sensible next step. The Stick Drift Test gives you a longer view for center error and repeat movement.
A drift reading is a clue, not a repair invoice. Check the signal twice before opening the shell.
03 / PC connection
The short answer is Bluetooth. Most Joy-Cons do not use a normal USB data cable for browser input, so your PC needs Bluetooth or a compatible adapter. Pair the left and right units one at a time. Then wake each device with a button press. The browser may not list a pad until that first press occurs.
If the lights keep flashing, remove an old pairing and try again. Avoid pairing several duplicate entries with the same name. A browser tab can also lose focus while a system dialog is open. Click the page, press one control, and check the selected P1 or P2 slot. The Joy-Con Test reads input in this tab. It does not send your button data to a server or change the Bluetooth pairing stored by the operating system.
04 / Stick signal
A good first check is simple: leave the stick alone and watch the live dot. A point close to the center is a good sign. A point that wanders, shakes, or stops away from center needs a longer check. The exact value can change with a browser, an adapter, or a game profile, so treat the reading as a signal check rather than a factory grade.

Press the stick if the model exposes a click signal. That test is separate from the analog reading. A click can work while the axis is worn, or the axis can look calm while the click switch fails. 05 / Rail controls
The SL and SR keys sit on the inner rail of a Joy-Con. They matter most in sideways mode, where a player uses the unit as a small one-hand pad. A folded ribbon cable carries those signals. Repeated docking, a hard pull, or a damaged rail can stop one key, both keys, or the player LEDs near the rail. The failure may look like a pairing issue because the rest of the controller still works.
To check the rail, connect one Joy-Con and choose Horizontal in the tool. Press SL, then SR, with a short pause between them. Watch for two separate pressed states. Try the same test with the other unit if both are paired. A missing light on the page is useful evidence, but it cannot prove which internal part failed. The browser sees the final button signal, not the ribbon trace or the rail contact itself.
A sideways game can also remap SL and SR. Check the raw button slots before you call a key dead. If the browser sees a value but a game does not, the game profile may be the layer that needs attention.
06 / Two devices
Yes. A computer can expose the left and right Joy-Cons as two independent Gamepad entries. They may appear in a different order after each pairing. That is why the tool uses player slots rather than assuming that P1 is always the left side. Press a button on each unit, then use P1 and P2 to compare the reported name, axes, and buttons.
Two separate entries are useful for repair work. Select the left unit and check its stick, minus key, shoulder keys, and SL/SR rail. Select the right unit and repeat the process for its stick, plus key, face keys, and rail. If one slot stays empty, wake that Joy-Con again. If both units show the same name, use the button response and raw slot values to tell them apart. Do not rely on the order alone.
Bluetooth can handle both devices, but radio noise and power saving can affect the link. Keep the computer close, remove stale duplicate pairings, and compare one unit at a time. 07 / Quick answers
The Grip can make two Joy-Cons feel wider, but it does not repair drift or change the short stick caps. Buy it for comfort, not as a fix. A Pro Controller may suit you better if you want one larger shell.
